Daddy - Mark 14:36 (NIV)

“Abba, Father,” he said, “Everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 

When Jesus entered the Garden of Gethsemane, He knew of the terrible death He was about to face.  He prayed to find the strength to cope with what was coming.  When He used the term “Abba” in His prayer, He put absolute trust into His Father, just like a child.  We at Lutheran Indian Ministries share our “Abba Father” with Native Americans, who usually have a negative definition of what a father is.  Many Native American men and women have grown up without a father. 

“Abba Father” is one of the most significant names of God in understanding how He relates to us.  It signifies a close, intimate relationship of a father to a child.  Many Native adults and children have never had an earthly father to show them how to put their trust in the Heavenly Father. 

It is life-changing to understand the full force of what it means to be able to call the one true God, daddy.  God is a father that will never let us down and will walk alongside us in every trial and tribulation we face.

Father,
Help us to reach out to those without a father and show them Your love and adoption through Faith in Jesus Christ.  Give us Your example of a father to share with those in need as we reflect upon our own Baptism and what You did for us on the Cross.  Lord, You are the Father to the fatherless.
