In anticipation... (Advent 2020)
Nawa!
Eagle corn is an incredibly unique brand. Its pure white kernels sport a purple spot that expands, as the corn grows, eventually looking like the spreading wings of an Eagle.
The last 50 kernels of Eagle Corn were kept in a mayonnaise jar, the last seeds of a mother corn that had nurtured the Pawnee people for generations and was taken with them when they were exiled from Nebraska to Oklahoma in the 1870s.
But the corn wouldn’t grow in Oklahoma.
But, in 2004, some Eagle Corn seeds were sent to Nebraska. The Pawnee had grown this corn there for 600 years and had taken pains to save it since we were forced to Oklahoma in the 1870s.
The story or Eagle Corn, which today is being grown as part of my tribe’s Pawnee Seed Project reminds me of the parable of the sower.
Jesus spoke the Parable of the Sower to teach us how important the state of our heart is to receive the Gospel and how our salvation is proved by our choices and actions after hearing the Gospel.
As you read these Advent devotions, I pray the stories of our efforts to prepare and repair the hearts of Native people to receive the Gospel will inspire, uplift, and sustain you.
Enjoy!
