Looking Forward to a Greater Capacity to Serve - May 2015 Haskell Construction Update

Haskell LIGHT Campus Ministry Construction Update May 2015

“We thank God for the six-man construction crew from Laborers For Christ (LFC). We’ve had some rainy days this month,” says Rev. Will Main (Dakota Sioux), director of Haskell LIGHT Campus Ministry in Lawrence, Kansas, “but the men are pressing through.”

Construction on Lutheran Indian Ministries’ new campus ministry facility continues in full swing. Since April, LFC volunteers have begun to put the roof beams in place and they will soon have the structure enclosed.

“With the majority of roof trusses in place and the four corners of the building enclosed with sheathing, the building is more clearly defined. It’s so impressive!” Will comments, adding, “I can feel my spirit rising higher at the thought of having such a greater capacity to serve our young Native men and women and community.”

The spring semester at Haskell Indian Nations University, whose campus is directly adjacent to the campus ministry site, has already come to an end. Summer sessions will begin very soon, but the students who left until fall have expressed how excited they are to return. One Alaska Native student summarized their enthusiasm well, saying, “It’s exciting for us to see this building, yet, it’s not about the building itself. It’s what we’ll be able to do inside.”

Opportunities for volunteers are fast-approaching! If you and your congregation would like to help with construction at Haskell LIGHT Campus Ministry, please call (785) 841-4809. Your hands-on help, prayers and support are all greatly appreciated.
