Installation Service for Bob Prue (Rosebud Sioux)
On Sunday, May 17, Bob Prue (Rosebud Sioux) was installed as deacon at Zion Lutheran Church in Oneida, Wisconsin. Bob will serve his internship at Zion as he continues his theological studies in preparation for Native ministry. Rev. Mark Schumm, pastor at Zion Lutheran Church, Oneida, officiated the service, along with Rev. Dr. Don Johnson, executive director of Lutheran Indian Ministries. Also in attendance were Bob’s wife, Deon, their two small boys, Deon’s grandparents and other loved ones. Staff from the Brookfield office also attended. The Oneida Singers sang “Jesus Loves Me” in their Native language as part of the children’s message.
So, what will Bob be doing in his role as deacon? Part of his responsibility is to become part of the Oneida community. “Generation Indigenous,” an initiative by the tribe to engage people of all ages, was first sparked from a desire to address the suicide rate among Native youth. Whether working with teens picking up trash, fixing hair at a Native nursing home or actively engaging Natives in Bible study, Bob and Deon are excited about the doors God is opening in Native ministry.
As he continues his theological training, Bob will become more involved in leading worship services at Zion, as well as visiting church members.
Bob recently attended the LCMS North Wisconsin District convention, where he had the opportunity to share his story with visitors to the booth.
Bob will also be in Des Moines, Iowa, at the LWML convention in June and will join with members of Zion in July as they participate in a servant event in Minto, Alaska. Deon is also engaged with their new community and will attend the Oneida Nation Pow-Wow held in July.
We encourage you to keep Bob and Deon and their sons, Treson and Jorey, in your prayers as they wholeheartedly serve the Lord.
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:23-24).
