Advent: The Eternal God Came - Thursday, December 5

Though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

John 1:10

The night of Jesus’ birth, in Bethlehem, was the night God, in His eternal being, touched physically the fallen humanity. He came down and touched our human hearts, and our human souls. That holy night, over 2000 years ago, the Eternal God came and joined our finite humanity. He came and became a man because of the love He has for us. What an amazing truth this is!

Yet in spite of this profound truth, many do not understand it. The Christmas season, which is set aside to remember the Almighty God who came to be born among us, is often overshadowed by the busyness of Christmas activities. There is shopping to be done, preparation of festive gatherings, and programs to plan and attend. There is nothing wrong with the activities in themselves but when they leave no room for reflection on the true meaning of Christmas, and the activities bring such wear and tear on our beings, then we need to change how we engage the season.

The disciple John wrote, “though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him” (John 1:10). “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.” Yet, he came so that we may have life (John 10:10).

This Christmas season set some time aside to reflect on this amazing truth! The Eternal God through Jesus came to us. One songwriter puts it this way, “Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Til He appears and the soul felt its worth . . . a thrill of hope the weary world rejoices.”

Yes, we can know the worth of our soul when we understand that God came and touched our human soul.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much for coming to us, just as we are, in our brokenness, to lead us to a better life - a life with Jesus. Help us to stay on this path. In Jesus' name, Amen.
