Blessing in Disguise - Monday, November 30 (Advent 2020)
Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. Galatians 3:23-25
In Alaska, being aware of limitations and learning how to take care of ourselves during the long winter months can be crucial to our well-being. Not only do we have to worry about the physical challenges of living at 30 below for weeks at a time, but the long winter months often heighten challenges like depression, anxiety, or other illnesses. Seasonal Affective Disorder can occur because of the lack of sunlight and a drop in serotonin or melatonin. These conditions can be debilitating, but developing healthy coping mechanisms can minimize some or all of the symptoms.
The same goes for the stressors of this holiday season. While some thrive on the added excitement, others go into survival mode. Sometimes we get lost in the rush, stressed by our own limitations, and are finally forced to admit that we can’t do it all. This can be a blessing in disguise as we learn to cope by eating healthy foods, being physically active, asking for help when needed, and, most importantly, accepting the peace God offers.
Advent culminates at the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Our blessing in disguise. This little baby born in a simple stable is actually God’s solution for our captivity to sin and the law. We are now able to focus on the new life and freedom given to us through faith in our Savior.
What a wonderful season! A seemingly unbeatable problem and a priceless gift of salvation as the solution. Jesus is our perfect gift, given freely.
Heavenly Father, You gave us exactly what we needed through Christ. Help me to remember this gift when I get overwhelmed by my physical and spiritual challenges. Please guide me as I trust in your grace and accept your gift of peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
